Il popolo indonesiano ha una coltivazione primitiva e l’insufficiente raccolto lo porta ad essere sempre più povero; le persone si nutrono dei prodotti che riescono a coltivare, ma, il più delle volte, i monsoni portano via quanto sono riusciti a seminare. Anche la pesca è molto scarsa, perché non ci sono i mezzi adatti, i pescatori prendono quel poco che basta per vivere “oggi”.
Le persone attingono acqua per bere dai pozzi o dai ruscelli, ma durante la stagione “secca” la scarsità di acqua mette a dura prova il popolo.
Nei piccoli villaggi non ci sono scuole e i bambini rimangono senza istruzione. Là dove ci sono, sono poche e frequentate da coloro che possono permettersi di pagare. I bambini, comunque, devono percorrere a piedi, ogni giorno, molti chilometri di strada per raggiungerle.
Nei villaggi ancora non c’è la corrente elettrica. Le case sono fatte di canna di bambù con il tetto di rami e foglie di palma; le strade sono scoscese, piene di pietre e ciottoli e non sono illuminate.
Non c’è nessuna possibilità di avere medicine e cure, ci si dà da fare con medicina naturale, quindi con le erbe; gli ospedali sono solo per chi ha i soldi.
